Theta Campaign - Return of the Dragon Queen – Episode 35 Pt. 1
This week’s tale begins with the giants of Sky’s Reach bearing down upon our brave adventuring party, their wills twisted by that of the Wish Dragon Sylverfang.
As the stone giants bore down upon his party, Beezul raised his Bee-Bee Gun once more, again imbuing the bee that he had loaded into it with the sparks of a lightning arrow. His eyes darted between the approaching Wiglof and his wife Hulda as they charged towards Prinze.
Beezul drew his breath in and fired his bee. In a bright flash it rocketed out of the pipe and whirred through Wiglof’s right shoulder.
“Ow! My lord!” shouted Wiglof in his regular monotoned voice.
Beezul fired another bee, this one leaving a hole through Wiglof’s right side. Blood streaked behind him, dripping onto the ground of Sky’s Reach as he called out with another cry of pain.
Growing furious that neither of his shots felled the charging giant, Beezul’s normally misaligned eyes narrowed in and focused on his target. The rough, hairy spines that ran down his head and back stood on end in his fury.
Allistair, not privy to the recent conflicts, emerged at the sounds of shouting from the house of Frank and Linda Swift, the groundskeepers they had saved weeks prior. Allistair’s eyes grew wide with confusion, and he began to charge across the expanse of Sky’s Reach to rejoin his companions.
Far off, on the other side of Sky’s Reach, he could see the dozens of ogres employed as guards and laborers by the masters of the skyland charging towards his group. Each ogre, clad in heavy chain and cast iron helmets, bore a pike, long enough to run two dozen men clean through, and a shield, wide enough to shield a horse in its entirety from the beating sun.
Alonzo, confused as to the sudden aggression of the giants, flew up towards Wiglof, narrowly dodging his swings and laid his hands upon his temple casting a restorative spell.
Instantly, the silvery smoke cleared from Wiglof’s eyes, and his will became his own once more.
Although cured, Wiglof finished his charge towards Prinze, feigning confusion as he punted the dragonkin as hard as he could.
“Sorry my lord. My body was not my own. I did not mean to cause you harm” Said Wiglof as Prinze tumbled backwards.
Wiglof continued his charge however, past Prinze, and terminating before Beezul before punching this dragonkin straight towards the ground.
“I did mean this one, my lord.” Said Wiglof, still maintaining his normal monotone
Wiglof stood still for a moment, after striking Beezul, shook his head and said, “Oh my, my lord. It appears I have regained full control over my faculties once again.”
Wiglof was in fact fooling nobody.
“Everybody gets one.” Replied Prinze as he turned to look towards Wiglof.
Wiglof smiled for a moment before his expression furrowed.
“Hulda, my wife. Please stop your charge. Do not harm our lord.” He said as Hulda continued her charge.
Much like her husband, Hulda charged forward, trampling over Prinze and stopping before Beezul before stomping down on the felled dragonkin.
Prinze righted himself, about to also absolve Hulda with her ‘one’, but noticed the silvery clouds still in her eyes.
Prinze thought inwardly for a moment, calling out to the shard of Jotunn sealed within his wraps.
Jotunn. Why are Wiglof and Hulda acting this way?
THEY HAVE BEEN POSSESSED, LITTLE ONE!
Well then, let’s repossess them.
“Hulda’s still possessed Alonzo!” Prinze called out as he jumped up, brushed the dirt off of himself, and ran vertically up the leg of Wiglof, coming to a halt atop his head. “Hulda! Don’t make me make you behave!”
Hulda stared at Prinze for a moment before beginning to draw back her fist to take a swing at him.
Prinze didn’t wait for Hulda to complete her swing however, making four quick strikes at her by unraveling his wraps and twisting them around her and holding her in place.
“Ow my lord. That hurts.” She said in a tone similarly monotoned to her husband as she struggled against the wraps that restrained her. Then, once she had realized that she was unable to complete her strike, she looked towards her husband, batting her silver clouded eyes at him.
Prinze looked down at Wiglof from atop his head, and Wiglof looked back up at Prinze.
“Wiglof.”
“Yes my lord?”
“You need to talk some sense into your wife.”
Wiglof sighed, “If only my lord.”
Beezul, furious as a hornet that both of the stone giants had swatted and trampled over him, stowed his pipe and drew his Bee Drills.
Now, Beezul’s Bee Drills were neither bees, nor drills, rather they were more akin to the conical tips of a lance. Each carved from a sizeable bone, and affixed with a handle at the non-pointy end, these “drills” are capable of delivering sharp, deadly stings, and often deliver a deadly poison to its victims, which, in this case, are soon to be Wiglof and Hulda.
Rising from the small crater that was left behind from being stomped into the ground by two giants, the furious Beezul jabbed once at the ankle of Wiglof, and again at that of Hulda.
Simultaneously the two shouted in monotoned voices, “Ow! You little shit! My lord! The small one stung us.”
“That’s because you hit me on purpose!” replied Beezul as he held his Bee Drills aloft, “And I’ll do it again!”
Wiglof made a grab for Beezul, bringing Prinze low for a swipe by the still possessed Hulda. Prinze ducked low, avoiding the swipe as Beezul scuttled just out of the reach of Wiglof.
Allistair finished closing the distance to his cohorts, drew his rapier, and conjured forth a blade of shadows just as the clanging of the ogres finished closing the distance to his fellows.
Alonzo and Prinze, previously preoccupied by the giants that harried them, snapped their attention towards their new guests, however, Beezul, in his rage, failed to notice them right off.
Alonzo, having flanked to the ground, out of the paths of Wiglof and Hulda, found himself surrounded by the encroaching ogres. He dodged and battered away several of their strikes before disappearing in a cloud of mist and reappearing thirty feet away behind the ear of Hulda.
He reached out, placing his hand upon her temple, and cleared her mind of possession just as he had Wiglof moments prior.
The silvery mist cleared from her eyes and she dropped to her knee before Prinze and Wiglof. “Apologies for my transgressions my lord. My mind is clear and once again mine.”
Prinze nodded and Wiglof replied, “Wow wife. You mind has cleared much faster than my own.”
“Nobody is falling for that Wiglof.” Snapped Prinze.
“Yes my lord.” He replied, “Apologies my lord.” Wiglof then took a knee beside his wife, placing Prinze back upon the ground.
“What do you command of us my lord?” asked Wiglof and Hulda in unison.
“As recompence for your attack, club these ogres unconscious so that Alonzo may remove their possession.” Replied Prinze.
“It will be done my lord.” Replied both in unison.
Wiglof and Hulda both rose, towering over the ogres that surrounded them. Wiglof cracked his knuckles and shook out his shoulders as Hulda cracked her neck and took a quick stretch of her legs.
The ogres, silvery-eyed, hesitated for a moment before raising their shields to block the oncoming attacks. Unfortunately for the ogres, however, they would quickly find out how outclassed in combat they were by Wiglof and Hulda.
Wiglof lunged forwards, striking his fists out in a flurry of stony strikes, each sending an ogre flying backwards into a tumble and leaving each in an unconscious heap.
After felling three in quick succession, he turned back towards Prinze, who stood there with mouth agape, and asked, “Does this please my lord?”
Prinze hesitated for a moment before replying, “Oh yeah!”
Hulda huffed, launching herself forward into a spinning kick, sending five more ogres flying in a similar fashion, ending her strikes with a downward heel kick into a sixth, burying it into a heap of dust and rocks.
Prinze and Wiglof paused, staring at each other, then at Hulda, then back at one another. Prinze nodded then took off in the opposite direction.
“Alonzo, let them take care of the Ogres!” he called out, “We need to go see to Blagothskul in his tower!”
Alonzo nodded in understanding and quickly followed behind, being trailed by the still enraged Beezul.
“Blagothskul controls the skyland. If he wanted to, he could cause us to plummet and crash!” shouted Prinze on their way up Blagothskul’s tower.
“Why would he want to do that?” asked Alonzo.
“There’s no telling.” Replied Prinze, “I doubt he’d want to. But if he’s under the same control as Wiglof and Hulda then Sylverfang might be making him.”
“I did notice the skyland elevating once the giants attacked.” Sad Beezul, “Maybe he’s trying to take us higher to make the drop bigger?”
“Wait!” said Alonzo, “You said Sylverfang lives on the…”
Suddenly Sky’s Reach began to plummet.
Alonzo, Beezul, and Prinze began tumbling upwards through the air towards the top of Blagothskul’s tower.
Calmly, Prinze replied, “Yeah, I figured at this point that was common knowledge?”
“Common knowledge to us… and Blinky and Maximus.” Replied Beezul, “Alonzo and Beezul have only been with us for a few weeks.”
“Really?” asked Prinze as he caught himself on a railing and launched himself towards Blagothskul’s door, “I thought it had been longer. You lose track of time when you’ve always got dragon killing on the brain.”
Alonzo and Beezul shrugged as they regained control over their movement by flying to land next to Prinze.
Allistair had hesitated for a few moments before pursuing the rest of his party, narrowly catching the door of the tower when the island began to plummet. Climbing in, he had only managed to ascent about half of the tower before he saw Alonzo, Beezul, and Prinze entering the giant door overhead.
Standing before the massive door separating the stairwell from Sky’s Reach’s Control Room, Prinze knocked, calling out, “Blagothskul! Are you doing okay in there?”
He waited a moment, getting no response, then tugged at the bell. He waited another moment before shrugging to Alonzo and Beezul, “Guess we have to do this the hard way?”
Alonzo lit his cigar and took a puff, “Gotta do what we’ve gotta do.”
Beezul produced his Bee-Bee Gun and loaded it.
Prinze fingered the fourfold amulet around his neck, touched the stone door, and shaped a doorway large enough for the three to pass through.
They stepped into the dark space, a huge, circular room clad in the same crystals that grew on the outside atop the tower. The only light within the room came from a large, crystalline monitor, one which Blagothskul hunched over, which was used to control the whole of Sky’s Reach.
Draped in a cloak that could cover any normal house like a drop cloth on the family’s antique chair, Blagothskul turned and looked up from the monitor towards the party.
His eyes glowed with a silvery mist, and a smile stretched out across his face, unnaturally wide, showing his white, pointed teeth.
Blagothskul sang out, “Worryyyyyyy noooooooooot! Myyyyyyyyy looooooooord!” and threw himself forward on the console.
The whole of Sky’s Reach lurched forward into a nose dive, and Blagothskul tore himself away from the console and leapt towards his master, and master’s companions.
Prinze slid forwards between Blagothskul’s legs as he landed, lashing out his wraps and entangling them around Blagothskul’s ankles. With a strong pull, Prinze managed to pull him just off balance and send Blagothskul tumbling forwards.
Felled like a mighty tree, Blagothskul looked forwards and used his momentum to bring both of his fists down upon the approaching Alonzo.
Alonzo, quick as lightning, threw up a magical shield that stopped Blagothskul’s fists midair. He rolled away, to the side, just as the shield shattered and disappeared. Blagothskul’s grin grew even wider, tearing at the corners of his mouth, and he turned to face Alonzo.
Alonzo, wielding his new lance in his hands, paused, then stepped forwards. He placed a hand upon Blagothskul’s temple and restored his faculties to him, just as he had with Wiglof and Hulda.
The silvery mist cleared from Blagothskul’s eyes, which began to leak and weep. His unnatural smile slowly returned to normal as he regained his sense of self.
Prinze unwrapped Blagothskul’s ankles and walked over to his head.
“It’ll be alright buddy… but, can you stop the skyland from falling?” asked Prinze.
Blagothskul nodded, rose, and strode back to the console. After a moment, Sky’s Reach ended its freefall and came to a halt.
“Are you alright Blagothskul?” asked Prinze.
“No my lord. I have not been alright for quite some time.” Replied Blagothskul.
“Do we need to beat the shit out of you some more? Are you still under the control of Sylverfang?”
“No my lord. Not unless that is what you wish. I am myself once more.”
“Oh, well… we can handle that another time.” Retorted Prinze.
“Thank you, my lord.”
“You know, maybe you need to get back out into the world? Date some other islands?”
There was silence as Blagothskul stared at Prinze, and Prinze stared back.
After tending to the wounds of his party and Blagothskul, Alonzo accompanied Beezul and Prinze back to the main thoroughfare of Sky’s Reach to tend Wiglof, Hulda, and the ogres.
With the island back in order, all seemed well… until Prinze shouted, “Skjalvarn!”
That is where this part of week’s tale ends, and the next part will begin.
